Wireless Mic Rental for Newsies

Recommended kit: MicKit Perform 16 · 16 channels

Newsies is a dance show. That’s the headline. Every number has backflips, every scene has a tap break, and the entire cast is sweating through their vests by “Seize the Day.” If you’re looking for wireless mic rental for Newsies, the MicKit Perform 16 is the kit you need. It ships nationwide in one turnkey road case with sixteen pre-paired channels, bodypacks, elements, fresh batteries, and a laminated quick-start card.

How many wireless mics does Newsies need?

A typical production mics fourteen to sixteen principals plus featured newsies:

  • Jack Kelly — the lead, carries “Santa Fe”
  • Katherine Plumber — “Watch What Happens”
  • Davey Jacobs
  • Crutchie — “Letter from the Refuge”
  • Les Jacobs — the young newsie
  • Medda Larkin — “That’s Rich”
  • Joseph Pulitzer — “The Bottom Line”
  • Race, Albert, Specs, Henry, Elmer, Finch, Mush, Romeo — the named newsies, featured throughout
  • Spot Conlon — Brooklyn newsie leader
  • Wiesel / Snyder / Roosevelt — usually doubled on one actor

You need at least twelve channels for the core, sixteen is comfortable. The newsies rotate on handoffs constantly, so sixteen dedicated packs let you feature different voices in “King of New York” and “Seize the Day” without re-miccing between numbers.

Rent the MicKit Perform 16. Sixteen channels is the correct count for a dance-heavy show where your principals also serve as featured ensemble in the production numbers. Newsies wireless microphones have to survive more sweat and physical contact than almost any other title on the school circuit.

Non-negotiable add-on:

  • MicKit Premium Element — “Seize the Day” has actual backflips. “King of New York” is a full tap number. “The World Will Know” has choreography in every verse. The GO-9WD flagship element is NOT optional for this show. It handles the sweat, the movement, and the max-SPL company choruses.
  • MicKit Power — tech week for Newsies is brutal. Add the power pack and stop worrying about batteries.

Show-specific mic notes

Three things every Newsies music director learns the hard way:

  1. Tape everything down. Tegaderm under the pack, gaff tape over the pack, and surgical tape on the cheek element. Then check it again at intermission. The acrobatics in this show will work loose any tape job that isn’t fully committed. Rent wireless mics for Newsies with a full roll of Tegaderm per performer.

  2. Sweat destroys elements. The GO-9WD element is rated for this abuse but standard elements will die mid-show. Brief your cast on not wiping their face with their forearm near the element. Have a tech ready with a spare element at intermission for anyone who has sweated through. Our mic placement guide has tape recipes specifically for shows with backflips and lifts.

  3. “Seize the Day” has actual lifts. Jack, Davey, and Crutchie are being thrown and caught. Packs mounted on the waistband will get ripped off. Sew pockets into the underlayer costume and route the cable up the back under the newsie vest. Test during full choreography tech.
